STRUCTURE AND BONDS

The purpose of this e-Portafolio is to apply Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) to learn Structure and Bond of Molecules.  This academic space-time is taken by students over the second semester on Environmental Chemistry Carrier.

Here you can find the Syllabus.

Structure and dimentions from micro to macro-cosmos

August 09, 2018

1. Answer the question:

  • Who are you in the universe?

  • Are you the center of the universe?

  • Could someone be the center of the universe?

  • What is the importance of your existance? (From the cosmos´s point of view).

2. Look the picture (lepidoptera) taken by professor Barón-Rodríguez from his plantation.  Answer the question:

  • What´s the size of this animal?

Look the real size of the animal.

3. Watch the video "Who are we in the universe?" and try to re-answer the questons.

4. Make a match activity.

5. In pairs, make an image where relate dimension and structure from micro to macro-cosmos (Make the draft inn class).

Put the title to the image and in 20 words describe what the image is about (main idea of the image)
In the next class, explain the image to your classmates (Both student present the image).

"THE HOMOLOGY OF THE COSMOS. Each one of us sees the world and the universe in different ways. In my drawing i try to capture that a structure from the microcosm to the macroscom how can be seen in the main imagen of the center, as for us our heart is super essencial part for uor body. likewife the sun is for the existencia of our life. I think that every part of our body in relation with the universe has a certain homology because it is something contrary." by Michel Karina Cárdenas Camacho (2018II).

"The connections.  The structure in the form of a web is repeated throughout the macro and micro universe, therefore the veins from a broad point of view contain life and matter." by Daniel Felipe García Rincón (2018II).

Desarrollo histórico del modelo atómico

March 15, 2016

Why the Desmodium incanum DC seed sticks to clothes, made of cotton, based on Dalton´s atomic model

May 17, 2018

Purpose: Apply the Dalton´s atomic model on the explanation of why the Desmodium incanum DC seed sticks to clothes.

Activity

1. Think and resolve the next challenges:

a) How many coins are needed to cover a front-page textbook?

b) How many marbles are needed to fill a bottle of water?

c) How many chlorine (Cl) and sodium (Na) atoms (really ions) are there in a table salt crystal? Note: Suppose a cubic crystal shape.

d) How many gold atoms would be necessary to cover a $50 colombian pesos coin? A $50 colombian pesos coin call "alpaca" with alloy of copper, zinc and nickel.

2. In KHANACADEMY (see bellow) read the subject “Dalton´s atomic theory” and try to re-answer the questions.

What have we learned since Dalton proposed his theory?

3. In pairs, make a creative model where illustrate a five (5) old year kid why the Desmodium incanum DC seed sticks to clothes, made of cotton, based on Dalton atomic model.  In the next class, explain the model to your classmates with a presentation and recycled materials (Both student present the model).

What is the important of periodic table?

Carbon Hibridization

May 17, 2016

Organic Chemistry lesson. It includes:

1. Learning to determine the hybridization of a carbon atom.

2. Hybridization helps explain bonding theory and in particular, why carbon can form 4 bonds creating diverse structures.

How do you represent structure?

January 01, 2020

There are many kinds of chemical structure representation.

1D or smile notation

2D or planar representation

3D

Many software has been develop to draw chemical structures:

  • 1D structure

UCalgary SMILES drawing tool, CORINA tool.

  • 2D structure

ChemSpider, ChemDoodle, BIOVIA Draw, ChemIDPlus,

  • 3D structure

ChemAxon, ChemSketch, ChemDraw, Avogadro, gifcreator, PyMol, WebMo, Jmol, Corina.
